The background has a gradient with a blending more over top of it to make it appear brighter and slightly translucent. The pictures on the left are made by circular marquees on stock photos. The top left text and the maple leaf is made by a clipping mask.
The background of this ad is a picture I took in forest glade. I made it black and white and translucent. The leafs, family, and Windsor greater area map all have a clipping mask of the same picture as the background, but in colour. It looks like it has a gradient on it. The bottom text is just an orange gradient under, and the top text has 2 seperate layers one with a clipping mask and white stroke and one with just a black stroke.
